What's this all about? Who is behind it?

Banned Books USA is conceived of and sponsored by Paul English and Joyce Linehan, in partnership with Bookshop.org and Electric Literature.‍

In response to the book challenges taking place in Florida, Banned Books USA will enable the delivery of books to libraries, educational institutions and anyone living in Florida to receive books from a list of books that have been banned and/or challenged in Florida, for only the cost of shipping.

Banned Books launched a pilot program October 2023, with books available for people in Florida. Anyone can order a book that has been banned from local schools or libraries to be shipped to someone in Florida.

If successful, the project will expand to other states, including Texas, Missouri and others. The cost of the books are covered by donations, including seed funding by tech entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul English. Additional funds are being raised from people concerned about the erosion of rights and freedoms that book bans represent; you can make an earmarked, tax-deductible donation through our partner Electric Literature here.

Our banned books list is assembled in a number of ways, via news reports, crowdsourcing, and lists maintained by organizations working to curtail these dangerous book bans, such as PEN America. However, neither Banned Books USA nor its partners in the Banned Books USA project are responsible for the accuracy of the banned books list. Book orders will be fulfilled by Bookshop.org, and the project is administered by the 501(c)3 nonprofit Electric Literature. Bookshop.org helps raise money for independent bookstores by providing back-end fulfillment and donating profits directly to bookstores. In addition, following with Bookshop.org’s business model, 10% of the cover price of all books paid for by Banned Books USA will be donated to support Florida bookstores during our Florida pilot.

Make a Donation to Help Cover the Cost of Books

In order to make these books free for readers, we are relying on donations from people like you. Supporters can make tax-deductible donations through Electric Literature, Banned Books USA’s nonprofit partner. Your contributions will help pay for the cost of books and keep the project going. Paul English kicked off the project with a 2:1 matching donation of $100,000; our goal is to raise an additional $50,000 so that up to 10,000 Floridians can receive one of the ~800 banned and challenged books in their state for only the cost of shipping. Donate here.
